Securing critical infrastructure all the way to the top

Protecting myriad connected devices will require a holistic approach to security risks

As more and more objects are connected, communicate and interact with each other, in what is labelled the internet of things (IoT), they become building blocks in larger systems. Known and unknown vulnerabilities in this wealth of objects are bound to attract cyber attacks that can bring down entire critical installations in many countries. Protection of IoT components against cyber threats, as well as of the systems that integrate them, is fast becoming a key priority.

IEC work on cyber security for energy infrastructure

International conference presents IEC activities in cyber security

Protecting energy security and critical energy infrastructure against cyber attacks is fast emerging as an absolute priority. In mid-February, the EnergyPact Foundation organized an international conference in Vienna on cyber security aimed at protecting such infrastructure. Eyal Adar, an expert on cyber security, outlined the extent of IEC standardization and Conformity Assessment (CA) activities in the domain, giving details of the areas to which they apply.

Joint IEC/IEEE Standard to improve substation operation

Precise time synchronization for grid automation needs a broadly accepted Standard

Communication between equipment and systems for the electric grid is an essential element of power utility automation, and central to the introduction of Smart Grids. The IEC and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) have joined forces to develop IEC/IEEE 61850-9-3:2016, a dual logo International Standard specifying a precision time protocol (PTP) profile for IEC and IEEE Standards applicable to power utility automation.

Finding the right Standards for Smart Grids

The IEC developed tools to help find the right International Standard for Smart Grid with minimal trouble

Smart Grids are seen as a necessary solution to overcome issues such as aging grid infrastructures, constantly expanding energy demand and the integration of a growing share of intermittent renewables into power networks. Smart Grids require a multitude of International Standards to ensure the various building blocks that cover all key areas are interoperable. The search for the right International Standards is made easier with IEC tools.

No power without communication

Communication between equipment and systems is increasingly important for electric power grids

A transition from one-way power distribution structures to two-way grids, where information is exchanged in both directions between producers and consumers, is taking place. This change to Smart Grids requires the incorporation of interoperable equipment and systems for controlling the electric power process into integrated systems and solutions. IEC Technical Committee (TC) 57: Power system management and associated information exchange, develops International Standards that are critical to this integration.
