Council, the supreme governing body of the IEC, held its meeting on 25 October 2019 during the IEC General Meeting in Shanghai.

Statutory issues concerning the election/appointment of:

Election results and appointments 

IEC Vice-President and SMB Chair

Council re-elected Dr Ralph Sporer from Germany as IEC Vice-President and Chair of the Standardization Management Board for a three-year term of office (2020-2022). 

Council Board

Council elected/re-elected five financial Group A Council Board Members for a three-year term of office (2020-2022).

Standardization Management Board

Council re-appointed six Automatically Appointed Member of the SMB for a three-year term of office (2020-2022):

Conformity Assessment Board

Council appointed two Automatically Appointed Members of the CAB for a three-year term of office (2020-2022):

Council elected/re-elected two Members of the CAB for a three-year term of office (2020-2022): 

  • Mr Kuster (Brazil)
  • Mr Nava y Uribe (Mexico) 

Financial matters

IEC Treasurer Jo Cops reported on the financial situation of the IEC. Council approved the Audited Report on the IEC Swiss GAAP Statutory Accounts for the financial year 2018.

Council approved the 2020 budget and the distribution of national dues for 2020. 

Appointment of the future IEC General Secretary and CEO

IEC Council appointed Mr Philippe Metzger as the future General Secretary and CEO of the IEC as of 1 February 2020, in succession to Mr Frans Vreeswijk.

84th General Meeting

Stockholm, Sweden, from 5 to 9 October 2020

85th General Meeting

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 17 to 21 October 2021

86th General Meeting

Council formally accepted the invitation of the United States National Committee to host the 2022 IEC General Meeting in San Francisco from 31 October to 4 November.

Pending invitations

While Council can only officially accept invitations from national committees up to three years in advance, some members have already declared their intention to issue an invitation to host a future IEC General Meeting: 

The National Committee of Egypt has stated its intention to host the IEC General Meeting in 2023 while the National Committees of the United Kingdom and Indonesia have expressed interest in hosting the General Meetings in 2024 and 2025, respectively. 

Appreciation to the General Meeting host

Council expressed its warm appreciation to all members of the Organizing Committee and the IEC National Committee of China for their excellent organization of the 83rd IEC General Meeting and for the generous hospitality extended to IEC delegates in Shanghai.
